ACP Street Libraries developed and upgraded an already quite significant cultural activity in several African countries: street libraries. The Action’s objectives are to facilitate and promote widespread access to reading, encourage cooperation and exchanges between artists from ACP countries, and preserve local literature and oral traditions by using digital technology and the creation of a mobile application.

1.    New Street Libraries in Ghana, Liberia, Cameroon and Mozambique

2.    New digital objects securing oral-transmitted tales and stories, artwork, songs, performing arts, etc.

3.    Web platform to support centralized content management

4.    Windows Phone Application to:

I. Access existing databases with cultural artefacts from ACP local communities and artists

II. Interact with cultural blogs, forum and events

III. Manage physical Street Libraries

After the kick off meeting in May 2014, and several months of preparation, the project officially launched 3 Street Libraries, that are now operational in GhanaLiberia and Cameroon.

The Street Libraries initiative, since the official launch of the project in May 2014, has been successfully implemented in implementation countries. So far, a total of 10 Street Libraries, distributed amongst Ghana, Cameroon and Liberia have been established and are currently operating in the field. Two more Street Libraries are planned, one in Ghana and another in Liberia, until the end of the year 2016.

The Street Libraries concept has been reaching schools and rural communities in diverse formats, e.g., mobile vans, reading hubs, book chests, literary clubs and school classroom mix of approaches.

As of August 2016, the Windows Phone App is available to the public for download from the Windows Store. The app is supported on both Windows Phone 10 and Windows Phone 8.1, and it can be downloaded from here and here, respectively.
